How to Win at Online Poker by Knowing your Opponents

Poker is not only a game of chance. Poker involves strategizing and analyzing your opponent. Knowing your opponents, how they move and how they think, is critical if you want to win in poker. But with the emergence of online poker, it becomes hard for even an experienced player to analyze their opponents. So how can you win at online poker? Here are some online poker strategies that you can do to know more about your opponents and therefore win.

What you need to do when playing online poker is to identify “tells”. “Tells” are known as the actions made by your opponents that can give you a hint of the cards that they are holding. In offline poker, players often wear glasses to prevent their opponents from seeing their eyes. That’s because the pupil of the eye of a player widens when they obtain a strong hand. An expert poker player would be able to observe this. But in online poker, you can’t see your opponent so you instead have to determine “tells”.

The first “tell” to observe is the speed at which your opponent plays. You need to know how slow or fast a player moves. A quick bet done by an opponent would mean that he/she has a weak hand. On the other hand, if the player takes time to finish his/her turn, it would mean that he/she is strategizing and thinking of the odds of winning.

Another “tell” you should observe are the checkboxes. There are two checkboxes you should be aware of: “check” and “raise any”. If you noticed that a player checks quickly, it would mean that he/she has a weak hand. But if the opponent makes use of the “raise any” checkbox, it would imply that he/she has a strong hand.

You should also be aware of chat boxes. Most online poker websites have chat boxes so that players can talk freely. However, you can also use this to determine “tells”. Some players love to chat a lot. But at times they become quiet. Be aware of this. Their being quiet might mean that they have a strong hand and that they are thinking of a way to increase the pot and win it. You may also try bluffing to manipulate your opponent’s moves.

Making use of “tells” in online poker is a great way to increase the odds of winning. Just make sure that you analyze your opponents carefully before arriving at a decision.
